This chapter surveys methods, techniques, and practices in Participatory Design PD that can lead to hybrid experiences - that is, practices that take place neither in the workers' domain, nor in the software professionals' domain, but in an "in-between" region that shares attributes of both the workers' space and the software professionals' space.

The first is Michael J. Muller’s “Participatory Design: The Third Space in HCI.” Muller has written extensively on participatory design in the field of software development. In this space where the two groups come together, assumptions can be questioned, knowledge can be exchanged, and a common language can be established to the betterment of both groups. He described Participatory Design as creating this third space which in turn can benefit the field of Human Computer Interaction. In comparison with participatory design, Joint Application Design is often a bit more about group dynamics, brainstorming, and organized group meetings.
