Rotokare Scenic Reserve is a bush and lake reserve in South Taranaki. Rotokare Scenic Reserve is a 230 hectare forested hill-country with extensive wetlands, native bush and a 17.8 hectare lake. It is managed by the Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust. The Lake Rotokare Walkway is a 4 km walking track that circles the lake.

It is quite a trek to get to Lake Rotokare behind Eltham but it is certainly worth it. This lake has been a reserve since the late 1800's. By the beginning of the 20th century it was quite neglected until a bunch of locals decided to do something about it. Their plans expanded to include a predator free fence over 8km long. Rotokare Scenic Reserve is at Sangster Road, 12 km from TKT work in partnership with Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust as the Taranaki Kohanga Kiwi at Rotokare (TKKR) and at any time their can be between 30-40 birds monitored in the reserve, growing a breeding population which is now providing kiwi to repopulate other sites, these birds are monitored by staff and volunteers from both organisations, a few of them are featured here.

Look out for native birds, such as bellbirds, tui, kereru, grey warbler, fernbird and spotless crake. You can use the seats dotted around the track for bird spotting or to simply be lazy we won’t judge. Lake Rotokare is a predator free scenic reserve just north of Eltham in Taranaki New Zealand. Our family spent a night exploring this cool spot. Somehow it took us over 3 years to finally head over to Lake Rotokare.

Both loops are grade 3 (intermediate) - suitable for regular experienced cyclists with a good level of fitness and over 12 years old; children should be accompanied by an adult (mountain biking New Zealand). The Rotokare Loop Mountain Bike Trail event is run by the Eltham Lions. Registration is from 7.30am and the and the Briefing is at 9.15am. There are two courses one being 17ks and the other is 25ks.
